Household Essentials ML-6017 Woven-Seagrass Magazine Rack with HandleReviewsSturdy and fits a good amount of magazines. Adds a nice touch to the decour of my livingroom instead of the wooden one I had before that looked like someone could have made it in wood shop. It was a little wobbly without magazines in it because of the weaving in the bottom, but once I put some items in it, it sat solidly on the ground. great texture on the sturdy basked makes it a perfect fit by my favorite chair in the library. The material of this rack feels a lot rougher than I expected. The magazines get caught on the sides and bunches up. I am really disappointed at the quality of this rack. The person who received this magazine rack was very pleased with its looks and durability. I ordered this to keep my husbands magazines and catalogs seperate from my own - we currently just have two stacks that are on the kitchen counter. It looks nice in the photo Amazon has, but when I received it I didn't like it. There were pieces of the hand woven grass sticking out various places and definetly didn't look as nice as the photo. I returned it. It would probably work for the floor or somewhere where you are not going to see it, but it wasn't nice enough for my kitchen... Average Rating:![]() |

Winsome Capri Set of 6 Foldable Fabric Baskets, BeigeReviewsperfect fit for my cabinet, and good quality.I like that there was an insert to keep the boxes square.Keeps things more organized. No complaints on the product. They are great quality. I haven't purchased this type of product before, but after extensive search of the internet I found that this brand (and other similar products), are ridiculously expensive - for what is essentially a small box! This Amazon vendor was the least expensive even after the excessive shipping costs (almost 50% more just for shipping). So, even though I thought the product was overpriced for me, the quality I received was excellent, the shipping time was fairly quick and they fit exactly what I needed. They seem sturdy and should last a long time. Average Rating:![]() |

Winsome Capri Foldable Fabric Baskets, Set of 4, BlackReviewsThese are convenient, however I bought them for my built-in bookshelves and they aren't as attractive as I had hoped. They look to be made out of the same material as reusable grocery bags. They fit nicely and it is so easy to get them flat for storage so I will be keeping them. I ordered them in black and think they may have looked nicer in beige. These wonderful little collapsible cubes are absolutely marvelous. They set up in a jiffy, and ready to use to pop into a closet, or anyplace you can think of. And they don't look cheap! We love them. Average Rating:![]() |

The Rich in America: 150 Years of Town & Country Magazine [VHS]ReviewsCovering everything from calling cards to aspic paddles, this video provides a rare glimpse into a world of wealth and privledge that most people only dream of. Rare black-and-white photographs and words from actual private diaries add to the glamour. Stroll along Fifth Avenue in New York City or Bellvue Avenue in Newport, view the spectacular mansions and play-palaces of America's upper echelon. I strongly reccomend this video to anyone interested in history or humor. This video was terrific. It used excellent narration, film footage, and still photographs to document the bizarre excess of the lives of the robber barons and other captains of industry at the turn of the century. It provides a terrific introduction for people studying the American literary movements of Realism and Naturalism (from the turn of the century) and it's an incredible lead-in to the study of The Great Gatsby. I highly recommend it. Average Rating:![]() |

Urban Series Magazine Rack and Floor LampReviewsThis lamp and table was about what we expected. It was fairly easy to assemble though there were a few issues with fitting the washers and screws together and we're not thrilled with the way the screws show in the back of the shades. The small light is good enough to read by and the bigger light throws enough light for the room. The table is big enough for the tv remote and a book or magazine. Average Rating:![]() |

This neat design offers you storage and lighting in one clean package. A top floor lamp paired with a side reading light gives you general room lighting and a reading lamp. A shelf and magazine rack below gives you space for magazines and TV remotes... |

Modern Contemporary Style Black Metal and Cloth Magazine RackReviewsMy wife purchased this exact same item from a catalog a couple of years ago and I am pleased to say that, a couple of years later, we are still keeping it by the coffee table. The assembly was easy - 10-15 minutes - and, as far as I can remember, 2 years later, no special tools were needed. The rack can hold a sufficient amount of magazines and I liked the fact that the 3 pockets allowed us to segregate the kids magazines - National Geographic, Discover - from some of the newsies and some illustrated books on interior decorating. Surprisingly, the rack manages to stay stable and well balanced, even when filled with material. The three sections do not stay neatly as shown on the picture. The cloth has to be evenly spread out between the three sections which is impossible without some modification. Magazines slouch and curl on each section of the rack. Average Rating:![]() |

Powell Sunday Funnies 5-Drawer ChestReviewsOne star for the design, one for the combination of colors. This item has low odor emission so you don't have to air it out before moving it into the room. The paint is pretty thin. When we got this chest, the yellow paint of the top surface was chipping but luckily it was in the back of the chest. Some of drawers front are rough as though they weren't sanded well. The paint is thin at the base that the wood was showing through. The back board of this chest is also very thin. This chest comes with exact number of nails & screws with no spare parts. Be careful so you won't lose any of the nails & screws. The drawers look as though they all have the same dimensions except for the top drawer but they aren't. We took the drawers out so it would be easier to move the chest upstairs. We had to switch the drawers in and out a few times before we got them all in correct orders. Otherwise there would be a lot of space between the drawers. The drawers don't close gracefully. The make pretty loud noise. I would not buy this line of furniture ever again. Average Rating:![]() |

The English Country House: From the Archives of Country Life (Country Life Magazine)ReviewsAs other reviewers have commented, there are many books on the genre, quite a few stimulated by the very well-received Treasure Houses of Britain exhibition brought to the U.S. some 25 years ago, itself no doubt encouraged by the Treasures of Chatsworth show five years earlier. Mario Butta's English style was all the rage up and down Park Avenue and "new country houses" were being built by billionaires in such "shires" as Charlottesville. On first hearing about this one, I expected another picture book on Blenheim, Wilton House, Chatsworth, etc., with a detailed discussion of John Nash's use of stucco, etc. Been there, done that. And Country Life brings to mind a stack of musty back issues with black and white photos from 1927 of Captain so-and-so and his wife Penelope with the local Hunt in front of a long-gone country house. Instead, the book features a series of country houses you have never heard of, beautiful and virtually all still occupied today. Some are old, some are 19th century, but many were built or drastically rebuilt within the last ten of twenty years, and with tremendous success. These are practical homes, not museums, and the interior photographs reveal a very contemporary lifestyle within a heritage exterior. And what photographs they are! An oversize book with full page, brilliantly done photographs, all in color, of exteriors, gardens and interiors with lots of helpful annotation to each photograph. They tell you who lives there now, including where the money came from, and show the adaptations they made to present day lifestyles and creature comforts. Nothing boring about any of them at all. Highly recommended for Anglophiles who thought they had seen everything on the subject of English country houses. You haven't seen these, even in the recent books on the subject of the new country house, and you won't want to miss them. The English Country House is a brilliant compendium from the archives of Country Life, the bible of the good life in Britain's late 19th and early 20th century heyday. Whatever your interest, be it interiors, exteriors and wonderful details or history, this will not disappoint. We are most fortunate to have the ability to be transported to a more genteel era and to be able to imagine just how the privileged lived and played before the Great Wars (WWI and WWII) changed life forever. While not an inexpensive buy, it is a worthwhile investment to any student of history. I have quite a few of these books on English, Scottish, and Irish homes. This is absolutely the best, hand's down. Pics are fabulous, text is excellent. Unique text interludes between chapters by "guest" authors on specialized topics related to these English Country homes is also a very good feature. But the photos are the reason for the five stars. I look forward for the next edition, since there are thousands of homes in England books like this could feature. Also, it'll take a sturdy coffee table to hold this book up, it's gotta be five pounds easy. Well worth it, and the cost. Buy it. Like another reviewer I have a large collection of books similar to this and am always concerned that there really won't be anything new to see or read....not the case with this one. I really enjoy the fact that they surveyed less well known houses. The photographs are great and the essays are really informative. This is an absolute must for every Anglophile! The photographs are simply beautiful and the text informative and accurate. Not only for a coffee table, but for real study of teh architecture and history of each period. Average Rating:![]() |

The Cook's Country Cookbook: Regional and Heirloom Favorites Tested and Reimagined for Today's Home CooksReviewsIf you are looking for a cookbook that you can go to and know that every recipe will be perfect, then this is a book for you. I have nearly every American's Test Kitchen cook book, and I have learned to trust them. The nice thing about the Cook's Country book is that the recipes tend to be simpler. Same level of satisfaction, slightly less time intensive. Cook's Country packs tons of information into their recipes, and sometimes that can be intimidating. While I appreciate all the background information, this book would be great just with the recipes. The Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies (p. 439) are the best chocolate chip cookies I've ever made. I also love the Hearty Beef Stew(p.63) and the Baked Ziti with Crumbled Italian Sausage (p.261), among others. Always have enjoyed the PBS show America's Test Kitchen. I love it that these folks have tested multiple recipes and done the trouble shooting for you. This cookbook is awesome, all the recipes I have made from it so far have turned out great. Like a previous reviewer I too am an experienced and long time home cook. How then could I disagree with all three points he made about the layout, the fonts, the material covered, etc.? I fail to understand how anyone familiar enough with Kimball to want this book would be surprised/distressed by any of the points brought up as negatives. First of all I find it easy to read although many other things are difficult for me to read in terms of the size of the font. I don't, however, use the cookbook or any cookbook in the kitchen. I always type out the recipes on the computer and print them for use and abuse in the kitchen. Then I have them on file, if they are 'keepers', and have easy access to a grocery list when I shop for ingredients. I bought the book for the commentary and discussion as well as the recipes themselves. There is much to be learned about technique, chemistry, flavors and many other of the details that make recipes what they are. We get to see Kimball's "we make the mistakes so you don't have to" credo played out step by step. So, the font is not too small for me and I'm a 'senior citizen with glasses'; I don't believe it's small just to accommodate the commentary, and I'm grateful for the commentary. I do not believe that a good cookbook or the best cookbooks necessarily have the entire recipe on a single page. That is a nice feature for sure, but it is one that makes the costs of published books soar. I'm really enjoying the book; I will read it through before I actually cook, but I've made ATK recipes before and have always been pleased with the outcome. I enjoy the "Cook's Country" TV program even more than ATK, and am delighted with the cookbook. It's a winner. This is so full of information, of how they took a recipe how it did work and didn't work and then makes it THE BEST it can be Spices you wouldn't have thought of, a different cheese, bean, type of meat or the cut to make it right! Every thing is EASY to follow! Step by TRUE step (even rack placement in oven!!!) Even easy hints for cutting meat, gadgets and cooking tricks to make it all come together easy and the BEST it can me. For everyday cooking this is the one cookbook to have! I'm actually in LOVE with this! =) Excellent book. Purchased as birthday gift for daughter & she is completely satisfied with the book. Average Rating:![]() |

Country Cooking: 2,151 Recipes from the Readers of Harrowsmith MagazineReviewsthe cookbook itself is great. However, the hardback book (that resembles a textbook) was sent in a regular manila folder. The book therefore arrived with a large chunk torn from the binding. I understand this happened in the shipping process, but it could have been easily avoided by using better packaging, even as simple as a padded folder. Cheap and careless on the sender's part. I prefer my books in better condition. If you order from this sender, request appropriate wrapping. This is the BEST cookbook. I collect cookbooks and I also reference my cookbook collection on a regular basis. I would recommend this cookbook to everybody. It's easy to follow the wide variety of recipes that are contained in this cookbook. The best part - all items are what we normally have in our pantries. Again, this is the BEST cookbook! This was published in three magazines in 1981, 1984 and 1987. Later it became a book in 1996 combining all of the above. Now the 2007 edition is the same thing. Recipes often don't give exact measurements. I found it difficult to use and donated it to the local library! This book is OK. Nothing stands out about it. I have better books that are full of country recipes and aren't even found here. Nothing more for me than an addition for my collection. Average Rating:![]() |
