Highlights From Most Men Are (1995 Studio Cast)ReviewsWhat more can I say? It made me laugh and cry! A really emotional, beautiful score. This musical is beautifully written. For a piece about AIDS it is suprisingly humorous--the song "DADDY'S PLAYBOY MAGAZINES" proves that! But other songs like "What If" and "You won't Die Alone" really can hit close to home. Very good stuff here! I got this CD because the title sounded cool! The music is really great. I wasn;t crazy about all of the singers, but the leads were great. And I really liked the music and lyrics. Song called "something bound to begin" has a very clever premise about gay men meeting and the song "you won't die alone" was very moving. I wish there were more songs, only 10 but they were all good. I've never heard of the writer, but he seems pretty talented. I'm getting his other cds next. I saw a production of MOST MEN ARE in New York in 1999 and I loved it! I had read that the CD was released in a great OUT magazine review but never could find it until AMAZON! The songs are incredibly original...My favorites are "DADDY'S PLAYBOY MAGAZINES" and "WE COULD RENT A MOVIE" The singers sound great and the orchestrations are really fun sounding. It really captrues the humorous and dramatic spirit of this great play. I still cry when I hear the last few songs. If you are looking for a rare, ecclectic off-b'way musical, this is the one to get! Playboy: Celebrity CenterfoldsReviewsIf you came to this for the erotic visuals (OK--that's a "Duh"), then be prepared to give that FF button quite a workout. There is a seemingly ENDLESS parade of interviews, bio's, trivia, & other unexciting footage--all, of course, impossibly intermingled with the photographic payoffs. The frustration--nay, the insult--is compounded by the glaring lack of ANY nude footage of a MAJORITY of the stars this production lists on the cover of the DVD! There is some assorted, fleeting eye candy of miscellaneous models thrown in along the way, but that's not what I bought this for. Also, when the producers ran out of visuals to accompany the narration, they just used images already seen, sometimes up to half a dozen times--not good. The only extended spreads we see--& a substantial proportion of these consists of stills from the magazine--are of Jenny McCarthy (often with far too many clothes on), Anna Nicole Smith, Shannon Tweed & Pamela Anderson. It's fun for a few moments, & the gals are beautiful--though there's nothing jaw-dropping of course, & the overwhelming bulk of it is PAINFULLY tame... Worth a rent, if that. This dvd explores the various celebrities that have been in Playboy pictorials. From playmates like Anna Nicole Smith and Pamela Anderson, to 80's pop star Debbie Gibson, to T.V. and movie star Jamie Pressley. If you like collecting Playboy DVD's like myself or if you just like to see celebrities in their birthday suit, This DVD is worth picking up. If anyone is reading my recent reviews they may note that I am concentrating on the girlie DVDs. I watch and love other types of movies especialy horror movies and enjoy them immensely. However I don't tend to review the DVDs I enjoy because other persons have usually done so and I tend to agree with the reviews. What disappoints me are that these types of DVDs have little or no reviews. Again I don't usually post a review of the ones I enjoy. It bugs me that the real lousy ones like this one don't have a review to warn you off from purchasing the damned thing. So arthritis aside I thought I would post a review to WARN YOU ALL!!!! The blurb says that this is a 2 hour documentary. In fact it is only 88 minutes long and it seems all the decent nudity has been cut out. You know what you get with Playboy, a load of egos gushing over each other saying how wonderful they and Hugh are and a load of mild soft focus nudity. However, I didn't expect this to be as bad as it was. I though I could cope with it because of the wonderful fast forward button BUT I found that I hardly paused and the end was quickly in sight! The majority of the nudity is what has already been flogged to death on other Playboy vids, ie Pamela Anderson, Jenny McCarthy, Shannon Tweed etc. The DVD is devided into segments, music, TV etc but it justs degenerates from the ridiculous to garbage {I won't credit it with sublimity}. The reason I risked this is because I was hoping it would show Debbie Gibson, Tiffany etc. It does feature Debbie(k/a Deborah to show maturity) but (and you note that there are a lot of buts here)it doesn't feature her in a live moving nude behind the scenes shoot just simply scans over her photo shoots so you hardly see her whole body in one frame (which is a big disapointment to someone like me who loves the austestic beauty of the female form especially one you know in real life or in the media. Now bearing in mind that I was constantly fast forwarding this disc I may have missed a brief second of nudity but under the music segment there are no other famous singers only girls who have been in music videos!!! I thought that the TV segment was ridiculous, (it spends precious time showing clips from the shows they featured in BUT no Playboy nudity unless, as I mentioned previously, we were given a namosecond show and I missed it) but the sport/olympian segment was farcical. It only really featured Katrina Witt BUT when it showed the German Playboy edition? shoot all her bikini bits were censored with red paint!!!!!! Could someone at Image or Playboy tell me what the hell that was all about! There is a running feature throughout the DVd with Adrienne Curry? from Real House? a reality show. Certainly she was a nice feisty filly broken in the end by a poor shoot BUT her feature was only for the cover so again no nudity and disappointingly so as she had a nice tidy body (hope people understand my English phrases) So yet again another disappointed Playboy DVD with hardly any of the 50 years of celebrities on view. The only good thing about Playboy is that because it is not explicit and tends to favour showing the whole female form (which is my bag) there are a hell of a lot females who are willing to pose for Playboy because they know the shots won't be gratuitous and wouldn't pose otherwise, so I'm grateful to Playboy for that BUT surely a Celebrity DVD should have feature more of them nude rather than just simply mention them? Well despite seeing gynaecological pics of Britney this week, it is her whole body I want to see, so I hope Playboy are still interesed in doing a shoot with her! Average Rating:![]() |

Firing Line with William F. Buckley Jr. "The Playboy Philosophy"ReviewsIn this early Firing Line filmed in black & white and broadcast without the distinctive Brandenburg Concerto theme music, William F. Buckley engages in a mono-e-mono with Hugh Hefner moderated by a third party. Buckley and Hefner go round and round, with Buckley trying to demonstrate that Hefner is inconsistent, contradictory, or lacking in an acceptable philosophical ground for his ethics, and with Hefner unwilling to concede any points. For example, when Hefner criticizes American sexual mores as unacceptable because arbitrary and rule-driven, Buckley points out that Hefner refuses to let the Playboy Bunnies in his clubs sleep with the customers even in their private lives and on their own time. Hefner's only defense is that this is for the protection of the Bunnies, although he has just critiqued protection (from venereal disease and out of wedlock births) as a control tactic used by religious authorities. Hefner does not acknowledge (or address) the parallel Buckley has set up between Hefner and religious authorities he dismisses. This talking at cross purposes characterizes the entire debate and mars it, although it is not clear whether Hefner is slippery or just a little fixated and confused in his thinking. While Buckley is clearly the superior debater, seen in retrospect from 2010, he is also clearly a dinosaur on the way out. Hefner's suit and pipe seem dated and affected, but he speaks with a vocabulary and perspective one would recognize today. It is Hefner that uses indefinite words like "values" as well as speaking of the "wall of separation." Buckley's terminology is precise, and he tries to avoid conflating legal matters with moral philosophy and letting the debate descend into a question of Constitutional Rights. His thinking is clear, but his assumptions (e.g., "man has a naturally religious outlook") are foreign to us. As to Hefner and the Playboy philosophy, one is struck by the inconsistency of the message and the lifestyle. While posing as prophet and practitioner of a universal ethic, Hefner's slightly adolescent eccentricity, difficulty expressing himself, and pursuit of living Barbie Dolls suggests someone using moral philosophy as a tool to leverage personal conquests rather than someone who has seriously thought out a social ethic. I don't know how much film footage there is of Hefner from these early years, so perhaps this video has some historical interest. As to its relevance to any current questions of sexual ethics, it can't have much. Hefner's appeal to Freud and liberation from psychological problems caused by sexual repression doesn't have much relevance today. In fact, Hefner's suggestion that sexual "perversions" (his word) are based in a socially-imposed repression of natural heterosexual fulfillment wouldn't fly with most sex-positive activists, either. There are a variety of reasons one might be interested in this video, and it delivers on most of them, although if you are looking for something salacious, you won't find it here. This is a fascinating look at the rising publishing/king, Hugh Hefner, in his fighting trim. Here, host Bill Buckley spars with Hefner with gloves of respect on, for the most part. Yet, he makes some of his wittiest asides, in his attempt to topple Hefner from his thin log of respectability as the darling media/king of faux philosphy. Only once, momentarily does Hefner unconsciously squirm into a defensive posture as Buckley gives the Playboy philosopher an historical lecture. It is a wonderful sharing of viewpoints,pre-dating the subsequent collapse of the Playboy empire due to its own self-importance and excesses,on an explicit magazine wrapped in cellaphane-thin philosphy by two opposing publshers. Very enjoyable. Average Rating:![]() |

Taped on September 12, 1966Between these two antagonists one might have expected a heated debate, but what we get instead is a serious discussion of sexual ethics in the latter part of the 20th century... |
