A Century Of Summers: The Impact of a Summer Colony on a Small Maine Coastal Town, 1886-1986 |
|
Down East Magazine calls this film a story of Maine's often ambivalent relationship with outsiders bent on "improving" her. This it does with surprising poignancy. Follow the residents of Hancock, Maine from 1886 to 1986 and see the effect that a summer colony can have on a small Maine coastal town. |

Sign-A-Lot, The Big Surprise! A "hands on" adventure!ReviewsWe run a preschool/daycare and I have to tell you these are the absolute best signing DVD's for kids out there. Even the older kids when they come home from school like to watch them. We have tried other series, but hands down this is the best one out there. The kids keep asking for it over and over! It keeps them entertained and learning at the same time. My five year old was three the first time she saw the Sign-A-Lot dvd's and she still wants to watch them now. She remembers her signs and will correct us when we mess up. She remembers so well that when I lost my voice for a week two months ago we just signed and she interpreted for everyone! My kids can't wait until they make a third DVD!! Definitely a must-have! this dvd is good because it has a lot of music in it and my daughter loves to hear music. i like it because it keeps my daughters attention and the words they teach are easy and easy to remember. however, i was wanting to get her a dvd that taught her more words that a baby would use, they go over some words that i dont expect her to ever use such as "salad", but i would buy it again as just a fun dvd if you just want your kid to watch something that keeps their attention. I teach a severely handicapped class for students who are in kindergarten through second grade. My students absolutely LOVE this video. They have learned so many signs, without even realizing they were learning! This video has become more of a reward than a supplement to my lesson plans! I just ordered the "ABC Games" video and I am so excited to have another "Sign-a-Lot" video to show my students. A must have for anyone who is or knows a child who has communication problems or disorders! I bought this for my 2 1/2 year old mildly autistic nephew for Christmas. He is learning how to sign as he has been slow to speak. He seems to like the DVD pretty well but there wasn't an overwhelming interest in it. I first taught my daughter to sign when she was 6 months old. This was one of the DVDs we used to teach her (and us) and she is now almost 4 years old and still loves to watch it over and over again. Her little brother (19 months) loves it too. The movie has children teach the signs along with an adult teacher which I think holds my children's interest. The songs are catchy too. A must for those teaching sign language to their children. Average Rating:![]() |

CakeReviewsSeeing David Sutcliffe dancing with a cross dresser was worth it!! I love him, and I love Heather Graham in this movie. I'm only disappointed that I've only seen it on tv and don't own the actual movie. I've taped it off my DVR, but am going to buy it, because I love it that much. Her drunk looking for her bra after her friends wedding is priceless! I am a Sandra Oh fan so I bought this movie because of her and Taye Diggs. It was fun to watch and I enjoyed it. Ok, so this movie is not going to be on any great movie lists, but I still enjoyed it. Sometimes you just need a movie where you don't need to think, you just watch and have fun. I liked the plot, and all of the actors (Heather Graham, David Sutcliffe, Taye Diggs, Sandra Oh) did a great job with their roles. A great chick flick for movie night! Director Nisha Ganatra and writer Tassie Cameron seem to have most of their experience in TV movies so this little slice of the industry is a change for them. Would that it were wholly successful because it seems as though both had a fine idea for something to say but just didn't know how to make it work. And again, blame the PR folks for making a cover for the DVD that not only seems silly, it has little to do with the story inside. Pippa McGee (Heather Graham) is a travel writer, a hedonist, and an independent woman who avoids relationships like the plague. The film starts with a goofus dash for a wedding in which she is once again a bridesmaid on the run. After the ceremony she jokes with her best friend Lulu (Sandra Oh) who is equally against long term relationships beyond a quick shag, and she also meets one Ian (David Sutcliffe - Under the Tuscan Sun, Testosterone, Happy Endings etc), a handsome if shy young man who though attracted to Pippa, sees her as dangerous territory. Pippa soon discovers that her father Malcolm McGee (Bruce Gray), a wealthy successful owner of a magazine conglomerate, is ill, has a heart attack, and though the father and daughter have had a negligible relationship, Pippa offers her help. Of course, her assignment is to be editor of 'Wedding Bells' magazine her departed mother started, and Pippa takes on the epitome of everything she loathes about relationships and marriage and tries to make a go of it. She discovers that Ian is her father's vice president and thus in charge of her new and loathed assignment. Pippa partners with the handsome magazine photographer Hemingway Jones (Taye Diggs), has a fling, and becomes close friends and partners in an attempt to change the look of the wedding magazine. There are far too many subplots to discuss, but suffice it to say that changes occur in the personalities of everyone involved and the ending, while entirely predictable, has enough humor and warmth to make a good evening out of a shaky story. Heather Graham handles her 'challengingly bad' role with great aplomb: she is a delight to watch. The remainder of the cast does their best with the lines they're given. This is a bit of fluff, aimed at the 'chick flick' devotees, but it has its moments. Grady Harp, July 06 I love "chick flicks"(as my husband calls them). This movie will not be winning any Oscars but I found it romantic, funny and entertaining. Heather Graham's character was likable and enjoyable to watch. I would recommend this movie. Bratz: Rock AngelzReviewsThis movie is excellent and it's about 4 fashionable girls including Yasmin, Sasha, Jade and Cloe. And it has new people including Roxxi. And the boys are here to Dylan and Cameron!! And it comes with a bonus Bratz Episode Crush in a Rush. I've had this dvd since 2005 or so. And it's still awesome!!! The plot is interesting, so you won't forget about this movie after watching it once. And the kids will sing the songs from it, because they are catchy. No offensive language(except says "barfomania" once), is witty and promotes kindness and friendship. Good family movie altogether. well,I was reading some of the reports, and I happend to see some reports talked about how bratz are ugly and etc...Well,how I figuired this out is that most of these people that are saying these things, has never seen the movie their selfs. So everyone that DOESN'T like bratz, but doesn't have a clue about this movie and is geeting their ideas from other reports,DON'T.Because most people came to see what other people that have SEEN the movie think about it and if they really should by it or not.One day I came to see the bratz rock angelz doll for x-mas and my chin dropped; Some kids were having a argument with an adult, about the lady saying Bratz are hookers just by the way they dress.Well she said something about her daughter dressing like them and thinking its cool. The way I see it is people have a problem with everything they are not so used to.An adult told me that when barbie was invented at first people said she was too sensual because of her body. Now barbie's a hit.The next thing you now bratz are going to be everywhere just like barbie was.I hope my report helped you on something. xoxo The movie is about four girls that have their own magazine. The characters are cloe,Yasinmn,Sasha and Jade.It takes place at the mall.I like the movie because it has interesting charcters.Another reason I like bratz,is because they have clothes that I like.Girls would like this movie because it has shopping and it is about friendship. this movie was the bomb seeing them flying to london to make there own magazine but cloe get's an eye on an guy and cameron is really in love with her.In this movie yasmin finds burind poll's dog and as a reward they get tickets to the opening of peas(i think) but once the teweills stoled there tickets the only way they can go in without the tickets is to be a rock band. That's how the name rockangelz was born. once they were in the bratz found roxxi she sang crash they asked her to join the band and see agreed. on stage they sang so good well cloe she dumped her london guy and went of to her real boyfriend that she was meant when she was a baby and that cameron.well roxxi became apart of them and rockangelz was the cover story of there bratz magazine.(remeber cloe is in jade's clothes and jade is in cloe's clothes. if you see the bratz rock angelz jade doll that's the clothes cloe will be wearing in the movie and cloe's clothes jade will be wearing in the movie so it's a mix around but do not be confused) Average Rating:![]() |

Backpacker Magazine's Guide to the Appalachian TrailReviewsThis well-written book is not only useful, but it's also fun to read. The author obviously did a ton of research on the formation of the trail, its founders, and its purpose -- a linear park system accessible to city-dwellers on the east coast. Mr. Chase includes a lot of useful information about sections of the AT, but this book is not one you'd use in place of a map or a trail guide. Instead, it characterizes the sections state-by-state, giving readers an idea of the feel of the terrain and what it's like to hike each part. It's really useful when picking a section for a trip, and to give hikers some very satisfying background information on the guys who thought up our beloved AT! The newly updated edition of the book also improved on the information included in the older version. If you just want a trail guide, look elsewhere. But if you're looking for a book that puts the AT in context and helps pick areas for dayhikes or longer section hikes, this is the book for you! You would be better served to get "The Appalachian Trail: A Visitor's Companion." It is more up to date, gives just as much information about the route of the AT in just one of its chapters and then goes on to tell you almost everything you would want to know about the natural world through which the trail passes. In preparation for my own thru-hike of the Appalachian trail, I am systematically reading as many books on this subject as I can. Jim Chase provides basic/summary information of what one can expect along the trail. Each chapter describes a section of the trail, providing background on the geology, history, and features of each section. Does not contain any photographs, other than the cover. Maps are rudimentary, but give you the basic idea. The author sometimes provides tips and solutions to specific challenges along the trail, but these are few and far between. I was constantly frustrated over the fact that the book describes the trail from North to South, while the majority of thru-hikers travel South to North. Then again, it never promised to be a Thru-Hiker's guide. I recommend this book as a good starting point for those just learning about the Appalachian Trail. If you are looking for more detailed information about each section of the trail, you will need to consult the other references available. Average Rating:![]() |
